Promoting integrity in scholarly research and its publication

COPE provides leadership in thinking on publication ethics and practical resources to educate and support members, and offers a professional voice in current debates.

Forum discussion
What are the particulars of ethics in book publishing? Does book publishing require independent consideration with respect to publication ethics? This is where the discussion began at our March Forum. Read the discussion with supporting materials including the key differences between journal and book publishing and sample cases to consider.

Our core practices

Core practices are the policies and practices journals and publishers need, to reach the highest standards in publication ethics. We include cases with advice, guidance for day-to-day practice, education modules and events on topical issues, to support journals and publishers fulfil their policies.

Guidance & discussion

COPE flowcharts guide you through process of publication ethics issues

Do you have a publication ethics issue on your desk that needs handling? Use COPE flowcharts to help guide you through the process. Our new look flowcharts, with more engaging visual styling, make it easier to follow the guidance.

New cases brought to the March Forum for discussion by members include: preprint plagiarism; author anonymity at the final proofreading stages; author alleges discrimination by institutional report.

We bring together support and guidance on issues that have come about during this crisis. Including articles on how authors, editors and reviewers are handling their work during this period, and guidelines developed.

There are complexities involved in changing names after article publication. COPE is working on guidance to make the process easier and more consistent for authors, editors and publishers. We welcome feedback.
